5 ways to make your dorm room feel like home

Someone close to your heart going off to college soon? Being away from home can be hard - especially if it's the first time!

In this blog post, we're sharing 5 ways to make a dorm room feel a little bit more cozy.

If you're the parent or loved one of a college student and want to give a little gift or you're a college student looking for some advice, read on!

1. Greenery

In a 2018 study, it was found that gardening and being in nature fostered a sense of community and belonging. Bring some nature inside with a succulent which is easy to care for and very low maintenance.

If you don't have much of a green thumb, pick up some faux greenery! Affordable options can be found at Target, Walmart, and other home decor stores.

2. Cozy Pillows

Your options for personalization are certainly limited when it comes to a dorm room especially when shared with a roommate. Pops of color, your personality, and texture/depth can all be achieved with cozy throw pillows.

Create a soft, comfy place for you to end your day and curl up with a good book when the homesickness might hit.

3. Lighting

Florescent bulbs not cutting it and making the space seem dreary and artificial? Adding a small warm lamp can bring on that extra sense of peace and coziness.

Twinkling lights can provide an ambience that uplifts any space and transforms it to a whimsical resting place.

4. Pictures, Prints, and Art

This is an obvious one! But print some photos of family, friends, quotes, and art that reflects YOU.

Your unique sense of style and experience can be reflected in the way you decorate your walls or bulletin boards. You can look on Etsy for unique prints or search Pinterest for ideas. Gallery walls can be a cool way to present your art and the possibilities are ENDLESS!

5. Scents

Most colleges won't allow you to bring candles as it poses an obvious fire risk, BUT there are a few alternatives! Wax melts + wax melt warmers can liven up the scent and also provide a cozy light. Other alternatives include reed diffusers and an non-scented option that would still provide the vibe of candle light, LED candles can also be used.

If you're looking for wax melts that are authentically southern, check out our wax melts in our 4 best-selling scents. Click HERE to check them out and get some for your favorite college-bound kid.
